Why Plurk Is Better Than Twitter
I started out this whole “social” networking experiment on Twitter because I had some friends there. I found that I could spend many hours watching the feed, checking out links that other people posted and posting my own and trying to network with other Twitterers. What I quickly learned was that Twitter, is not really that “social” at all, responses are far and few between unless you directly comment on someones tweet, I never knew if people liked my tweets or if they even checked out a link I posted. Then completely by accident I discovered Plurk. What makes Plurk different is that you get feedback, almost instantly, to anything that you post. I have been using Plurk for less than a month and I already have more friends there than on Twitter and we actually communicate! The whole Plurk mechanism for social networking is far superior to Twitters, by it’s very nature you can’t help but leave feed back and enter into discussions with people. If Twitter is going to survive the social networking boom that is going on right now it is going to have to offer up more unique perspective, because right now it is falling behind.

A better Wordpress Mobile plugin!
Alex King has a great mobile plugin for Wordpress. It’s very lean, has its own layout complete with css, and displays it very nicely on a mobile browser. It does not allow for mobile management or posting but I think the simplicity of the design makes up for that. You can always post via email.
My Spore Creature - Meet Koozi
I downloaded the trial Spore Creature Creator today and this is what I came up with on my first try.
I am really excited about this game coming out and will no doubt buy the full version of the Creature Creator. It’s only 10 bucks but seems wrong that they are charging for it at all.
1st Social networking made film?
Faintheart is billed as “The world’s first publicly generated movie.” by Jamie Kantrowitz, vice-president of marketing for MySpace. With a budget of $2.6 million the film was created with the input of MySpace subscribers. The MySpace group was asked to choose the director and the music, they also vied for small roles in the film and provided input on plot development.
This should be an interesting experiment and I am anxious to see it. I am a big movie fan, and I love films from all genres. I also spent a good portion of my career working in the film and television industry and I know that the more input a project has the more diluted it becomes. My guess is that making films this way will ultimately fail although the novelty of it will probably give it a good albeit short lived run.
Sorry there does not seem to be a trailer available for this one yet… but a Faintheart trailer Google search brings up a whole lot of auditions.

We have no internet this morning due to a power outage at Cogecos switch here in Fort Erie. That means no phone either which could be bad, but also means that there are no telephone solicitors calling either. When I called to find out what the problem was Cogeco service told me there was a major power outage here, but my lights are on so it can’t be that major. They also informed me that they had a technician working on it… hahahaha! more like sitting there waiting for power to be restored so that he could check that the switches all came back up. What really bugs me is that they don’t put backup power in a place that is notorious for power outages!
I needs me a Drobo
You may or may not have heard of this little devil but I finally went and checked it out today. What a great piece of hardware! Drobo is according to the website “The world’s first storage robot”. It’s external storage that acts like a RAID but it is not a RAID device, so then how is it like a RAID you ask? the answer is that it provides data redundancy in case of hard drive failure. What sets it apart is that it does not require the same sized hard drives so you can mix and match any size SATA drives you have ( a minimum of 2 ) it also allows you to add another drive at any time ( maximum of 4 ) without any downtime. That means that you can upgrade the size of your Drobo volume whenever you need more space. If by some chance you have all four drive bays in the Drobo filled you can swap out the smallest drive for a larger one and carry on your merry way without skipping a beat ( you don’t even have to power down the Drobo unit ) all of these great features are what makes it a robot. Cool Wordpress plugin lets me post from my mobile phone. It’s called Wordpress Mobile. It reformats your Wordpress site for mobile devices. You do need to know your html because it doesn’t auto-insert links for you, but it does do pictures.
Tech In The North
I have been vacationing at my Aunt and Uncle’s cottage, in north eastern Ontario about 2hrs from Ottawa, for the last week. I was surprised to find that Telus (my cellular provider) has increased their coverage so that I get reasonable service for my mobile phone (call and data). I was very surprised to find that the local laundry mat has high-speed internet and free WiFi access. According to the proprietor the WiFi is free because of a deal he has with the municipality that provides free WiFi for the larger community that is 25Kms up the road, they subsidize his internet so he can provide it to the small community here . Now had I know this earlier I would probably have blogged about it sooner because this is spot is only 8Kms from the cottage. I guess I shouldn’t be that surprised by the municipalities providing free internet through wireless because it is easy to deploy and the area that needs to be covered (at town of only about 3000) is relatively small. Some people will see the invasion of this technology as a bad thing, people using their cellphones out on the lake and bringing their laptops into the cafes and laundry mats, but what I see is a whole wealth of new resources being offered to communities that can really benefit from them. For me it provides an easy way to stay in touch and still do the things I like from a place that I truly love.
HTC S640 Full review
I have had the Telus HTC S640 for over a week now so I thought it was time that I did up a full review of it. So here we go.
Let me start by saying that I got this phone because it was cheap (with customer loyalty and new term package it only cost me 50 bucks). The main selling feature over some of the other units was the WiFi capability, I really wanted to be able to use the phone off-line in hot-spots especially when I am in the USA so I don’t incur roaming data charges.
My main reason for upgrading at all was the mobile email capability which for me works amazingly well, using the IMAP protocol in Outlook 2007 and on the phone I can sync my Gmail account between the web, my desktop and my phone without issue.
The unit runs Windows Mobile 6 (Smartphone) and comes bundled with Office Mobile (Word, Excel and Powerpoint) and it really is great if you need to edit or approve a document while you are on the go. With Active-Sync the contacts from Outlook on my desktop show up in the phone and any changes I make in either the phone or on the desktop sync flawlessly. The phone call quality is very good and overall I am pleased with how it functions as a phone it does what you would expect. It also supports Bluetooth, and has a microSD expansion slot which will take up to a 4GB card (although I hear people are using 8GB without issue). It also has a 2MP AF camera. It ships with a stereo headset, charger and y-adaptor so you can use the headset and charge or sync at the same time.
As for the negatives about this phone, there are a few. The camera is just terrible, I have yet to take a decent picture of anything. It is very slow and without an enormous amount of light and and incredibly steady hand you get unusable pictures. I didn’t buy this as a replacement for my digital camera but I was hoping to be able to use it to snap picts to email to clients to show them things I have found or just to friends for fun, neither is really possible and I have almost given up using it. The WiFi and Bluetooth, while very useful, are brutal on your battery life, it won’t last the day if either is turned on all the time. Last but not least is sync time, it takes about 20mins to sync 2GB of songs to the microSD card which is really a problem if you decide to change over your music at the last minute.
